Warehouse Management System
Modern warehouse depends on Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) for Supply Chain execution services such as directed stock rotation, intelligent picking directives, automatic consolidation, automatic storage/ retrieval (AS/RS) and cross-docking to maximize the use of valuable warehouse space. Warehouse Management System also comes with features for effectively managing the workforce, optimizing the order delivery schedule, maintaining on-time delivery performance and measuring the overall performance and utilization of a warehouse. The systems also direct and optimizes stock put-away based on real-time information about the status of bin utilization. Warehouse management systems utilize Auto ID Data Capture technology, such as barcode scanners, mobile computers, wireless LANs and RFID to efficiently monitor the flow of products. Once data has been collected, there is either a batch synchronization with, or a real-time wireless transmission to a central database. Automated data capture and synchronization enables checks at multiple points to prevent mistakes in picking, packaging and transportation. The database can then provide useful reports about the status of goods in the warehouse. Many warehouse management systems are interfaced with other enterprise applications like Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP), Transportation Management System, Inventory Management System, Order Management System etc. This provides a method of automatically receiving inventory, processing orders, and handling returns. |
